Description

The influence of French architecture on the city of Buenos Aires predominated during certain periods of its history, particularly at the beginning of the 20th century, when great residences were built in the district running from Retiro to Recoleta, and as far as Carlos Pellegrini Square. The prevailing style was that of French classicism of the 17th and 18th centuries. For that reason, the city became known as “the Paris of South America.”

The photographs by Xavier A. Verstraeten capture those mansions that remain, most of which have been transformed into imposing embassy headquarters. Text by Fabio Grementieri, an architect who specializes in cultural heritage, enriches with its historical data and commentary on architectural and decorative details this document recording the sumptuous lifestyle of Argentina’s past.
